This report covers design work and ethos for 4GLS to date. Further design
activities will continue over the coming year and your comments and thoughts

ERLP Sub-System Assembly and Test Activities
Assembly and testing is currently underway of sub systems for the ERLP
in the DL Assembly Hall at the rear of the Stores building. The facility consists
of an ISO 5 clean room, insertion device construction room, magnet test room
and large capacity assembly hall for the range of collaborative projects involving
technical build and measurement work at DL. Almost all of the capacity at
present is taken up by ERLP to ensure that the project milestones are met.

£1.6 Million in Funding
Additional funding, of £1.6M over the next two years, for technical
design work on 4GLS has just been announced.

Start-to-end-Simulations
The first start-to-end simulations for
transportation of the electron beam around ERLP have been completed. To verify
the predicted performance of the ERLP and its free electron laser (FEL),
an integrated study of the overall beam dynamics of the accelerator has been
carried out.

EuroFEL Bid TOPS the List
The 4GLS team have been successful in attracting EU FP6 Design Studies funding
as key participants in ‘EUROFEL’. In total Euro9M has been approved
for work to run for three years starting in April 2005.

4GLS Moves into SRD
In a very positive move, the SR Director Mike Chesters has taken 4GLS and
the ERL Prototype project into the SRD fold. This will ensure full representation
of both projects at senior levels.

The CCLRC Programme Board approved an increased total resource allocation
of £13.922M for the project. A further £0.8M is to be held in
reserve as contingency. The project will run over four years, the deadline
for the construction of the ERL Prototype remains at March 2006.

Ministers give go-ahead for the next development stage
of 4GLS in Cheshire.
The building of the world-leading 4GLS (4th generation
light source) has come one step closer with the announcement today of £11.5
million for an exploratory phase of the project. This phase involves a 3-year
study to establish the technical know-how needed to build this innovative
scientific research facility, including the construction of a prototype
test facility.
