JLAB Resistor Test
After considerable assistance by scientists and engineers at The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Virginia USA (JLAB), Engineers at Daresbury have finally had an opportunity to redress the balance… if only in a small way, by building a special high Voltage conditioning resistor for JLAB’s new high voltage surface testing facility.

Four Hundred and Fifty Thousand Volt Success on Energy Recovery Prototype Photoinjector
In the Autumn, after extensive investigations of high voltage breakdown within the ERLP injector, the decision was made to disassemble the high voltage components to allow individual components to be cleaned and tested. The benifits of this action have recently been demonstrated when a new stable maximum voltage of 450 kV was sustained for many hours. (On first commissioning the injector system had proved unstable at voltages above 400 kV)
The team are currently working toward re-establishing ERLP injector beam later this month, after the activation of the photoinjector cathode.

Lord Sainsbury visits ERLP at Daresbury LaboratoryLord Sainsbury, Minister for Science and Innovation, visited Daresbury Laboratory on 19th September to open the Cockcroft Institute and the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus. As part of his tour, he was shown around the Energy Recovery Linac Prototype machine , ERLP, for the UK’s fourth generation light source project, 4GLS, by Professor Wendy Flavell of the University of Manchester and CCLRC.

First Beam From the Photoinjector on ERLP
At 01:08 on Wednesday 16th August the 4GLS Team achieved
first beam from the photoinjector on ERLP.
I would particularly like to draw attention to the great work of Susan Smith who is leading the commissioning team and who has very successfully driven this aspect of the project. Underpinning this success is, not surprisingly, more than 2 years of design and construction work under demanding circumstances by many people across several CCLRC Departments.
This is the first of the ERLP major milestones and it's a great achievement for all.
